Description

James Brown Western-Style Funky Suit, Circa 1977. Made of brown wool, top with long sleeves, added tan-colored suede detailing sewn on chest, waist, and sleeve areas, further adorned with yellow rhinestones, clear rhinestones on front read "JB" while others on back spell out "Godfather / of / Soul," five snap front closure, back with gathered waist; together with a pair of matching pants, bell-bottomed, with similar suede and rhinestone detailing as shirt; no labels present in either article of clothing as suit was evidently custom-made for the star. (Please note there are a number of moth holes throughout and some parts of the tan suede are stained due to use and wear.)
    PROVENANCE:
Sometime around 1977, the current owner obtained this costume directly from James Brown when he and his then girlfriend were able to get backstage at "Future Shock," the Turner Broadcasting System [TBS] musical/variety television show filmed in Atlanta, Georgia which Brown hosted from 1976 to 1978. Brown took a liking to the couple (especially the girlfriend) and gave them this outfit as a souvenir -- one that he likely wore on a episode of "Future Shock" as he changed his clothing numerous times throughout each show.
