Description
George Harrison Pink Shirt Worn on Stage at the Cavern Club (UK, Circa 1961-1963). A fantastic Beatles item with a charming provenance involving four young London girls on a cold and rainy February weekend pilgrimage to Liverpool, or "the Sacred City - Beatle Land" as they called it. Fortunately, the adventure was chronicled in an extremely detailed contemporary 12-page typescript short story written by one of the girls and included with George's shirt. The adventure begins late on a Friday night, February 21, 1964 at the Victoria Coach Station in London as Maxine, Janice, Jenny and Marilyn board a bus to make the all-night journey to Liverpool armed with cameras, a tape recorder, an insatiable love for the Beatles and the indomitable spirit of youth. The story recounts visits to each one of the Beatles family homes where they were warmly welcomed by various Fab Four family members including Paul's dad (who treated them to canned soup and tea), and Ringo's mom and dad for tea and tours, a less than optimal visit to John's Aunt Mimi's house on Menlove Avenue. It was while the girls were visiting George's family home at Mackets Lane and being showed round by George's mother and father that two Oxfam ladies knocked on the door seeking Beatles donations for a raffle in support of famine relief. Mrs. Harrison donated the pink cotton shirt current on auction. The extremely small pink cotton shirt with a "Jewel" label measures 17.5" shoulder seam to shoulder seam with 22" sleeves. Marilyn writes: "Mrs. Harrison brought down one of George's old shirts, which we all kissed. It was pink with black stains under the arms. She told us that George wore a black polo-neck jumper underneath it in the Cavern. When he played at the Cavern, he used to sweat so much that his clothes were dripping when he came home. We all bought tickets for the raffle, which included some of John Lennon's hair. I don't normally win anything in raffles, but I won George's shirt and John's hair. I kept the shirt but gave the hair to Janice who loved John the most." The original raffle ticket and two original photographs of the girls with George's mother in George's room are included with the shirt. Lastly, a photocopy of Marilyn's original scrapbook of their visit is included. The scrapbook wonderfully brings the written account to life. This lot would be a major highlight for the most ardent Beatle collector.Auction Info
