    Description

Bob Dylan "Freight Train Blues" Vintage 10" Metal Acetate from Producer John Hammond A one-sided 10-inch metal acetate for Bob Dylan's "Freight Train Blues," which belonged to legendary Columbia Records producer John Hammond, who discovered and signed Dylan and produced his first two LPs. Also included are two highly detailed Letters of Provenance which trace this disc's history.

Bob Dylan's first album was recorded in November 1961, all in two sessions. Comprising 13 tracks in all, single-song acetates were cut for each song and given to John Hammond, the album's producer and the legendary exec who signed the young Mr. Dylan. This is one of those 13, and we have "Gospel Plow" in another lot this auction. These acetates were all the final takes used on the album.

That means this acetate was almost certainly cut in 1961. For the album which came out in March 1962. Since that time, how many Bob Dylan singles, albums, EPs, cassettes, compact discs and MP3s do you think have been sold in all of the world's countries? The number must be approaching a billion, if not exceeding that by now.

It's a good bet that this disc is probably one of the first 13 Bob Dylan records to ever exist on the planet.

He has no Minnesota-based acetates, he has no "In Spite of All the Danger" one-off's from before his label signing like the Beatles did. And Dylan had no singles come out before his first album; "Mixed Up Confusion" was still a year away.

Otherwise, the two erudite Letters of Provenance that accompany this rare, unique disc tell the rest of the story.

And excuse our editorializing for a moment, but who in the world doesn't love "Freight Train Blues"? Easily one of the album's strongest tracks, powered by Dylan's driving acoustic guitar and harmonica. The vocalized acrobatics Dylan exercises on the word "blues" is just absolutely crazy. He's never in his career sounded so energized, wound-up, enthusiastic, eager to please and hungry.

Graded to VG-EX 6 condition. LOA from Jeff Gold. LOP from Missy Staunton. COA from Heritage Auctions.

The movie quite literally changed my life. I have included a pic of me in Sly's Rocky 3 Cashmere overcoat, would much appreciate if it is possible for you to forward this email to Sly to let him know the overcoat is in good hands, and will be well taken care of, (as will be the Rambo knife forging tools, the other lot I won!) Wish you very happy holidays and a great 2016!
