    Description

Bob Dylan 1964 Handbill for First-Ever London, England Concert. An original concert-advertising flyer for Bob Dylan appearing at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England, his first concert in that world-famous city. It was a Sunday afternoon concert, 3:00 PM, on May 17, 1964, just a week short of Dylan's 23rd birthday.

Although Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin' album had been out for almost four months, the flyer bills him as "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" and plugs "Blowin' in the Wind," seemingly a step or two behind the times. But Dylan's second album had just entered the U.K. sales charts for the first time, so the show was a little retro, heavy on Freewheelin' material. But Dylan also unveiled three dramatic new compositions to the spellbound Londoners: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Chimes of Freedom" and "It Ain't Me, Babe." The reviews were glowing the next day.

A very scarce piece making its first-ever appearance in a Heritage auction. Measures 7 3/8" x 9 7/8" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Since Dylan was leaning on Freewheelin' material on this occasion, he performed the only known live version of that album's "Down the Highway." According to Clinton Heylin's book Bob Dylan: A Life in Stolen Moments, he also performed "Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance," "Bob Dylan's Dream," "Talkin' World War III Blues," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and "Masters of War." Leave it to Dylan, however, to not perform "Blowin' in the Wind" on this occasion, despite it being the Freewheelin's most famous song and also plugged on the handbill.

Stolen Moments also reports that after the show, "A delighted Dylan signs autographs at the front of the stage. As he leaves the hall by the stage door, Dylan is mobbed and forced to return inside until an alternative escape route can be organized."

Condition details: Flyer has light handling and creasing throughout, and natural overall toning both front and back, both consistent with its age. If any creases had to be singled out, they would be in the upper left corner area and lower right edge under "7600." Also, slight nicks in the red on the left edge over from "Bob." Very solid condition for a piece of this vintage.
