Beatles Related: Stuart Sutcliffe Handwritten Letter. Regularly referred to as "The Fifth Beatle" and often credited with naming the band, Stuart Sutcliffe was a gifted painter and more interested in art than music. This three-page, double sided letter on Bruno Koschmider Betriebe letterhead was handwritten by Sutcliffe in blue ink circa 1960, while the Beatles were playing a series of gigs in Hamburg. It reads in part: "I can't really get talking to these German girls because I've still got a guilty conscience about the war. Actually, I can't speak the language, and it's a bit difficult making small talk." Later, he states: "Anyway, as I said before we're having quite a hectic time here but Liverpool is better and I'm dying to get back and paint...". Ironically, Sutcliffe would soon meet his German fiancee, Astrid Kirchherr, quit the Beatles, and relocate to Hamburg to study art at the Hamburg State Art College. He died soon after from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 21. The letter is in Fine condition with heavy fold creases, some wear, a few small tears, and a little discoloration. Several small doodles by Sutcliffe illustrate the text throughout. A great item with fantastic content. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
