Beatles - John Lennon Autograph From "Obscene" Bag One Lithograph. When John's Bag One lithographs were first shown in London, officials from Scotland Yard famously raided the exhibit on its second day and confiscated eight of the prints, which were deemed to be obscene. Shortly thereafter, in March 1970, the Merrill Chase Art Gallery in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park also exhibited Bag One, and history repeated itself. Local authorities confiscated five of the sexually explicit images, but didn't stop there, and eventually the five lithographs were ordered to be destroyed by burning - which to our knowledge is the only time that John's lithographs were legally declared obscene. This fascinating lot includes a John Lennon signature which survived the destruction, and a trove of legal documents, photographs, and news clippings which lay out the dramatic story of the case, officially known as "People of the State of Illinois vs. Five John Lennon Lithographs" - you just can't make that up! The Lennon signature is in bold pencil measuring 6" long, on cream colored paper consistent with the original lithographic edition, roughly cut to approximately 9" x 5". The signature is presented in a 12" x 11" black wooden frame which contains a newspaper clipping dated June 8, 1970 that reports on the burning. COA From Heritage Auctions.
