Beatles - A European How I Won The War (Wie Ich Den Krieg Gewann) Archive of Film Posters, Photos, and Promotional Material (Germany, Belgium, and Holland, 1966 and later).
Here is a very nice and complete archive of original promotional material from several European countries for the film known in English as How I Won The War, starring John Lennon. The Beatles had become friends with director Richard Lester while working on A Hard Day's Night and HELP! , and he asked John to take on the role of Private Gripweed for the film, which was made in the Fall of 1966. This very impressive archive of material related to the film includes theatrical posters, lobby cards, press photographs, and promotional materials. Most of the material is German, including three rare theatrical one sheet posters: the first, an image of John only with his head off the body measures 23" x 32.5" and is in Excellent condition, no creases, some tape residue on the reverse; the second, an image of Michael Crawford and John in Very Good condition, measuring 23 x 32.5" with tape residue in the corners on both sides including the image, and several small tears along the folds: the third, a collage of photos and review text in Very Good condition with numerous tack holes in the corners. Also a set of seven color lobby cards, two featuring John mounted on cardboard in Very Good condition, some tackholes on a few cards. Also a German press packet including original two- and three- page photocopied typed documents, a film synopsis and biographies of Michael Cooper and John, and two different film programs. Also a rare large Belgian theatre preview poster, 19" x 14" in Excellent condition with some very slight foxing, and a small 12-page Dutch press booklet, Very Good. Also a group of six small original snapshots taken of the filming, including on a photo of John and another actor sitting in a foxhole, in Excellent condition. Finally are a fifteen large format photos, vintage press and later, all Very Good or better, the largest 8" x 12", a later button of John as Gripweed, and a reproduction of the first issue of Rolling Stone magazine with John as Gripweed pictured on the cover. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.
