Woody Guthrie Twice-Signed Songwriter's Contract for "The Blinding of Isaac Woodwards" [sic], Circa 1946. A four-page typed, stapled document, 8.5" x 11", being an agreement between Woody Guthrie and People's Songs, Inc. for transferring the rights to the composition "The Blinding of Isaac Woodard." The great folksinger and activist signed boldly in black ink on both page three and page four. Lightly toned, else fine.
People's Songs was an organization founded in 1945 by Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, and Alan Lomax to "create, promote, and distribute songs of labor and the American people." This particular song was inspired by a heinous incident that took place on February 12, 1946, in Batesburg, South Carolina, where a just-discharged African-American soldier. Sergeant Isaac Woodard, on his way home to North Carolina, was taken off a Greyhound bus by local police; they beat him repeatedly with their nightsticks before jailing and fining him. His injuries and lack of timely and competent medical treatment left him permanently blind in both eyes. The story was eventually picked up by the national press leading to popular outcry in favor of the Civil Rights movement. Woody Guthrie would later write about the song he wrote: "I sung this Isaac Woodard song in the Lewisohn Stadium one night for more than 36,000 people, and I got the loudest applause I've ever got in my whole life. This song is a long song, but most of the action is told in Isaac's own words. I made this ballad up because we'll need lots of songs like this one before we win our fight for racial equality in our big free United States."
