With the Beatles Signed LP Obtained by a British Newspaper Reporter on October 31, 1964 (Parlophone PMC 1206, 1963). A signed copy of the Beatles second UK album. All four of the lads from Liverpool have neatly penned their autographs on the back cover: "Paul McCartney", "Ringo Starr", and "John Lennon" horizontally along the top, and "George Harrison" vertically nearer the bottom, all in ink (various) and all with excellent contrast. It was a common practice in Britain at this time for albums to be signed on the back because the fronts were coated with a slick paper that ink didn't adhere to well. The original record is included, grading an EX-7; the cover is VG-5 with some creases and soiling minimally affecting the signatures. If so desired, a qualified paper restorer could mitigate much of this wear.

The story about how these autographs were obtained is an interesting one. A 22-year old reporter for the East Anglian Daily Times, a local newspaper based in Ipswich, went as part of a crew to interview the Beatles on the Saturday morning before their afternoon and evening concerts at the Gaumont Theater. In a fascinating signed article written to accompany this album, he tells the story of how he went into a record store on the way to the venue and purchased both their albums. He was successful in that endeavor and when he was later chastised by a senior reporter for being juvenile in asking pop singers for their autographs, he replied "...I think someday those autographs may be valuable." That was an understatement; in our April 2014 Auction #7089 (Lot 46244), Heritage sold the Please Please Me they signed for $40,625. This With the Beatles album was sent at that time to an eight year-old American cousin named Sarah who is now selling her prized signed LP through Heritage. The reporter's letter is included with the album cover. Though not really a Beatles fan, he does admit, in closing, that: "The Beatles, love 'em or leave 'em, led Britain and even the world into an entirely new era of attitudes and mores."
