The Beatles: Rare Signature Set with Jimmy Nicol (June 1964). The now legendary path of the Beatles in their march to immortality took a strange twist during June of 1964. The Beatles were to tour Scandinavia, Holland, the Far East and Australia. But, on June 3, the day before the tour, Ringo collapsed at an early morning photo session for the Saturday Evening Post at a portrait studio in Barnes, London. He had a 102-degree fever and tonsillitis and was rushed to the hospital. While having his tonsils out in London, he was temporarily replaced for the Denmark and Holland concert dates by shy 24-year-old session drummer Jimmy Nicol. Beatles producer George Martin suggested Jimmy because he had recently recorded at EMI with Tommy Quickly and he'd also recently become familiar with Beatles numbers while drumming on a recording session for an album called Beatlemania. Although this replacement was met with great defiance by members of the Beatles camp, namely George Harrison, the tour proceeded with Jimmy Nicol as an honorary member of The Fab Four. Ringo was discharged from the hospital on June 11, and he rejoined the group in Melbourne on June 15, 1964. After less then two weeks, the dream ride for Jimmy Nicol was over, and he headed back to London and vanished back into anonymity. Capturing that strange chain of events is this vintage set of signatures obtained during the early leg of the June '64 tour, handsomely signed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Jimmy Nicol in blue ballpoint pen. Accomplished on the reverse of a Rolls Royce 707 jetliner postcard, this item stands in overall fine condition, with only slight impressions at the edges and a faint shade of toning. Most importantly, the signatures are bold and distinguished, standing as a solid "9" collectively. Included is a rare 11 x14 color photo of them at press conference, off the negative and suitable for matting. A letter of provenance accompanies the autographs. From The Tom Fontaine Music Memorabilia Collection.
