    Description

John Lennon's Aunt Mimi Smith 1967 Handwritten Letter. A May 1967 handwritten letter to an American fan on the verso of two 5.5" x 3.5" Beatle promo postcards, with original envelope. Great content about the Sgt. Pepper album: "...John comes down now & again, but at the moment they are recording again. I'm looking forward to hearing the new L.P. John says it's good." Of course, the new LP mentioned is Sgt. Pepper. The Beatles had all grown mustaches by the end of 1966, a fact that Mimi obviously didn't care for: "I don't like the whiskers & will be glad when they decide to shave them right off." By the end of June 1967, both John and Paul had shaved their "whiskers" off; we're sure that pleased Aunt Mimi. Seldom offered. Full transcript available on our website. Ex-Sotheby's. Fine.

The handwritten return address is "Smith/ Harbor's Edge/ 126 Panorama Road/ Sandbanks Poole/. Dorset, ENGLAND". This is the house that John bought for her in 1965 because of constant hounding by fans in Liverpool. She would live out her life there. COA from Heritage Auctions.

    Mimi Smith Letter Transcript:

    "May 1967

"Dear Leslie. Thanks for your letter.

"First of all, John has no relative, cousin or otherwise, called Mike Lennon. Someone has been joking.

"I don't know what you mean by 'Stick Shift' on the Car, but that's not important, as I'm not really interested in Cars. Neither is John, only as a means of getting from one place to another but to drive one---no!

"It is very kind of the girls to ask about me, the very best wishes to them all.

"I don't think you will see much of the country if you stay 6 weeks in Oxford. I was in Italy last year & again I was astonished at the rate at which you dear Americans rushed from one place to another. I'm sure they were exhausted by the time they got home and would certainly need another holiday of complete rest to recover.

"I hope you have a nice time while you are over here, and find everything to your liking. This part of Dorset is very quiet, overlooking Poole Harbour. John comes down now & again, but at the moment they are recording again. I'm looking forward to hearing the new L.P. John says it's good. I don't like the whiskers & will be glad when they decide to shave them right off.

"Best wishes to you, Mimi Smith."
