Elvis Presley's Signed Application for Membership in the Screen Actors Guild (1956). Dated August 21, 1956, and 8.5" x 5.5" in size, this document is titled "Screen Actors Guild, Inc. Class A and AJ Applicants". It reads, in full: "I wish to be eligible to act in motion pictures and I am therefore applying for membership in the Screen Actors Guild. I understand the obtaining of employment is my own responsibility and it is not the function of the Screen Actors Guild to aid in securing employment for its members." He has signed beneath: "Elvis Presley" in black ink. This young actor would never have to worry about finding employment! Presley had screen-tested for Hal Wallis at Paramount Studios earlier this same year and had been offered a contract. Part of that deal was that Elvis could make one film a year for other studios. Wallis couldn't immediately find the proper vehicle for his first movie, so he was loaned out to 20th Century Fox for a film titled Love Me Tender. The starting date for shooting was August 22, 1956, one day after he applied for SAG membership with this very form! The rest, as they say, is history; he acted in 33 movies between 1956 and 1972.
