Elvis 4-Page Handwritten and Signed Letter to Anita Wood (1958). Written to Anita Wood, his girlfriend at the time, this four-page letter, handwritten and signed by Elvis, is the most personal offering in the auction. Elvis began dating Wood in 1957, and before Priscilla came into his life, Anita was his most significant lady.
The letter was penned just six weeks after Private Presley arrived in Germany. Elvis reveals himself to be more the typical lonely soldier missing his girlfriend back home than the nation's number one entertainment attraction.
When Elvis wrote he usually kept it short, rarely using more than one page. This is not only one of the longest letters by Elvis known to exist, it is also among the most emotional. Acknowledging recent letters from Anita referring to media accounts of his flirtations with a German girl, he writes: "I just received your letters and I can judge by the last 3 that you are a little disappointed." Blaming the media for exaggerating facts, he tells Anita: "regardless of what you read ... please remember that I am yours my darling, yours, yours, yours, yours, yours."
Elvis' pet name for Anita was "Little", and he uses it repeatedly in the letter. At one point, his fantasy gets a little steamy: "I can feel your little hair on the side of my face and sometimes I get so excited and want you so bad I start sweating."
The complete text of this fascinating letter is found in Elvis - Word for Word (Osborne Enterprises, 1999), but only the actual handwritten letter can convey the heartfelt outpouring of raw emotion that Anita Wood read as Christmas approached in 1958: "It sure is going to be a blue Christmas this year. But in 15 short months it'll be over and as General MacArthur said, 'I shall return.' "
If there were any doubt that Elvis was above the normal insecurities of a 23-year-old in a faraway land, this letter dispels that notion! Read the entire letter at
Included is the original envelope addressed to "Miss Anita Wood" in New York, from Elvis Presley, posted November 14, 1958 at Ray Barracks in Friedberg, Germany, through the U.S. ARMY-AIR FORCE POSTAL SERVICE. Accompanied by a copy of a letter of provenance from Anita Wood Brewer to Jerry Osborne, the original purchaser of the letter in 1996.
Also included is a rare white label Sun "D.J. Copy" of Anita Wood's 45 rpm single, "I'll Wait Forever" (the first we've seen!) and a copy of Remembering Elvis - 30 Years Later from Life (2007), loaded with interesting photos from the years immediately preceding, during, and following Elvis' service years. The record comes with COAs from Scotty Moore's Personal Collection and Rick Consola.
