Chet Baker Handwritten Documents, Including Suicide Note This is a harrowing lot of property which illustrates the hard life of famed jazz musician Chet Baker. A long-time drug addict, Baker lived in Europe, recording and touring, for most of the ten years prior to his death in May, 1988. Often his longtime companion Diane Vavra would return to her home in California, bringing great sadness to Baker as these documents illustrate. One, an unsigned two page letter handwritten to Vavra in blue ink on blue stationery and dated June 30th, 1986, is a plea for her return to him. The other, handwritten in blue ink on ruled note paper, is an undated suicide note. It reads: "To who-ever finds and reads this note. I've been trying to kill myself for a month by shooting speed balls with large quantities of cocain and heroin. I'm now down to about 120 lbs. and not looking well. Since Diane decided against me I haven't wanted to live. Without her I feel nothing except for the music. Thats what I hang on to. Sincerely, Chet Baker" In the margins the note also also includes flight schedules, apparently for a possible return to his birthplace in Oklahoma, and a name and phone number. Included with the lot is a receipt in Baker's name from a hotel in Amsterdam and a royalty statement to Baker from a European label, both dated 1987, an Amsterdam hotel and minibar key, and a group of color photographs taken of Chet rehearsing in a hotel room and also on stage, presumably in European locations. In overall Very Good condition. From the Collection of Diane Vavra.
