Description

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Big Bopper Signed Autograph Book. When the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson ended in a tragic plane crash in the early morning hours of February 3, 1959, that day became forever known as the Day the Music Died. Three pioneering musicians were cut down in their prime, though their influence and legacy can still be felt. This autograph book features signatures from all three, with the date "1/31/59" added to the pages by an unknown hand, making these some of the last autographs given by Holly, Valens, and the Bopper, obtained by the original owner at their performances in Duluth, Minnesota. A diary-like entry on one page reads in part: "Buddy Holly was also good. Though his glasses were thick he's real cute." Waylon Jennings also signed a page in the book. Jennings' participation in the fateful coin toss just a few days later decided who would and who would not be on that tragic plane flight; Jennings often cited that event as the day his life took a turn for the worse. An interesting note on the night these autographs were acquired: in the audience that evening was the fourteen-year-old Bob Dylan, who was so moved by the show that he followed into the same career himself. A fantastic item in Fine to Very Fine condition with some wear to the cover and somewhat loose hinges. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
