Buddy Holly Memorial Concert Ticket Signed by Multiple Stars (Surf Ballroom, 1979). The Surf Ballroom was a favorite music venue for the regional population in the 1950s, but on February 2, 1959 it hosted its biggest concert ever, "The Winter Dance Party" starring Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Dion & The Belmonts, and others. The momentous occasion was spoiled by the tragic events of the early morning hours of February 3, when Holly, Valens, and the Bopper died in a plane crash en route to the next stop on their scheduled tour, Fargo, ND.

In 1979 the Surf Ballroom held its first "Buddy Holly Memorial Concert" tribute, which has continued annually to this day. Offered here is a rare unused ticket for that premiere event. Only 25 or so such tickets are known to exist, as the vast majority were used and had the end stub removed at the venue. This one is unique among even the other unused tickets because of the autographs on both sides, including Chris Montez, Jimmy Clanton, Tommy Allsup (Holly's guitarist, who "lost" a coin toss to Valens for the privilege to be on the doomed plane with Holly), members of Valens' family, and other stars and participants in the memorial event, some 16 in all. It's the third lowest-numbered unused ticket - the two lower-numbered ones, both unsigned, sold years ago for approximately $1000 each.

The 7.5" x 2.5" ticket is in Near Mint condition and encased in a hard plastic holder.

    More Information:

The ticket's front side signees left to right include:

    1) Chris Montez - a protegé of Ritchie Valens who became a big star in his own right during the '60s ("Let's Dance, Call Me, The More I See You") and is still performing today.

    2) Ritchie Valens' siblings Connie, Irma, and Mario ("BBB" is for his  "Backyard Blues Band").

    3) "Hound Dog", leader of the Rock/Rockabilly/Doo-wop band, the Whitesidewalls.

    4) Bob Morales, Valens' older brother.

    5) Marvelous Marvin Short, the award-winning Blues and Rock saxophonist and song stylist.

The back of the ticket has:

    1) Tommy Allsup - Buddy Holly's guitarist in 1959, who lost a coin flip with Ritchie Valens to be on the doomed plane with Holly and the Big Bopper.

    2) Jimmy Clanton - teen heart throb of the '50s and '60s ("Just A Dream; Go, Jimmy, Go; Venus in Blue Jeans") and still actively touring.

    3) Richie Lee, famed Buddy Holly impressionist.

    4) "Swanee" of the Whitesidewalls.

    5) Alan Clark, guitarist for numerous Rock and Rockabilly bands since the 1960s, including the Eddie Cochran Band, and publisher of books on Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

    6) Albert Lee, virtuoso British guitarist who's played with Eric Clapton, Emmy Lou Harris, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, The Everly Brothers, and has had 14 solo albums since 1979 - and a big Buddy Holly fan.

    7) Legendary Midwest DJ the Mad Hatter, founder of the Buddy Holly Memorial Concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA, and official MC for many of the earliest shows.

    8) Maxine Porter Pinkney, widow of Bill Pinkney, one of the original members of the Drifters. Maxine managed the Drifters after Bill's death.

    9) One autograph is unidentified, but is likely from one of the latter day members of the Drifters.
