Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Other British Rock Autographs (early 1960s). This 4" x 6" modest-appearing red autograph book is full of impressive surprises - a veritable Who's Who of early 1960s British bands! It contains autographs of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Hollies, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry (Pacemakers) Marsden, and 20 more artists from the early 1960s. It comes with 3 TRACKS Autograph Authentications and a handwritten letter from the original owner, 16 year old Christine Stevens, providing clear provenance and describing how she tracked down the Beatles.

AUTOGRAPHS: All four of the Beatles are here (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr); all five Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts); four of the Hollies (Graham Nash, Tony Hicks, Allen Clarke, Bobby Elliott); Billy J. Kramer and all four of the Dakotas (Michael Maxfield, Ray Jones, Robin MacDonald, Tony Mansfield); five members of the Undertakers (Jackie Lomax, Chris Huston, Geoff Nugent, Brian Jones [not the Stones' Jones], Bob Evans); Gerry Marsden and one of his Pacemakers (Lee Chadwick); two members of Cliff Richard's backing group The Shadows (Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch); Eden Kane (a popular pop singer in the UK); and several others we haven't been able to identify.
BEATLES - The book contains very nice signatures of each Beatle, all with first and last name signed, between 3" to 4" long, with the same blue ballpoint pen. They were signed all at the same time and unhurried! BOTH Paul AND Ringo added the word "Beatles" before their signature and Paul added "To Christine". John's signature is unusually large and very clear.
ROLLING STONES -This little treasure also contains the 5 original members of the Rolling Stones including the very rare Brian Jones signature. Charlie, Keith, Bill and Brian also added XX's under their signature with Keith adding "Love" above his name. The Stones signatures are remarkably clean, bright, and bold!
AUTHENTICATION - The book comes with 3 COAs from Paul Wane of TRACKS, one for the Beatles signatures, a separate COA for the Stones, and a third COA for all the other various artists! TRACKS of the UK is one of the most definitive authorities for authentic Beatle signatures in the world and their COAs come with a lifetime guarantee!

OWNER'S LETTER - The handwritten letter from the book's original owner, Christine Stevens, provides a fascinating description of her encounter with the Beatles. The week of 8/12/63 to 8/17/63 the Beatles were performing at the Odeon Cinema in Llandudno. As she and her boyfriend drove past the Grand Hotel in Wales, she spotted the Beatles getting out of their car, so she had her boyfriend stop and let her out. She chased the Beatles into the hotel lobby, lied to the doorman that she was staying there, and caught up to them. Note that this all occurred exactly 50 years ago this month, August 1963!!

GEORGE J HARRISON: One of the greatest elements of this autograph book is the unique signature of George Harrison. John Lennon had just recently told Billy Kramer he should add a "J" middle initial to jazz up his name, which Billy did, but George hadn't seen yet. Christine describes why George signed his own name with the middle initial "J"!!!. In her words:

"I had just asked Billy J Kramer for his [autograph], and when I offered my book to George Harrison to sign, he was flipping through pages to see who else I had obtained. He came across Billy J Kramer, and laughingly said, "Wow, that's posh" and he then signed my book as George J Harrison."

This is a classic and intimate example of the Beatles' sense of humor and reluctance to take themselves (or others) too seriously. And it could be the only example anyone will ever find of a "George J. Harrison" autograph!!

The book is intact, no pages removed, but it should be noted that there is some wear around the edges of the book. After Christine got an autograph, she would cut each person's face from a periodical and tape it beside the autograph, making it even more fun and interesting to thumb through the pages. However, over time some of the tape has discolored to varying degrees on many pages and some images fell out, leaving a larger discoloration. Depending on the eye of the beholder, these marks testify to the age and loving ownership of this book, or they are unsightly blemishes, or maybe somewhere in between. Regardless, this book is a unique treasure from a very special era.
