Description

Beatles - Ringo Starr Handwritten Postcard to His Grandmother from Hamburg, Signed "Richy" (Hamburg, November 9, 1960). An 8.25" x 3.75" color photo postcard with an image on the front titled "Hamburg: Jungfernstieg und Binnenalster" (a major boulevard next to a lake). The back is addressed by Ringo to Mrs. Gleaves in Dingle, Liverpool, postmarked November 9, 1960 (stamp missing), and bears the following handwritten message in blue ink (as written): "Dear Gramma. Arrived and having a great time in Hamburg. The weather hear is not to bad. We are playing in a big new club. The people hear are O.K. that all for now see you soon. Lots of Love. Richy xxxxx". At this time Ringo was in Hamburg performing at the Kaiserkeller with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. One of the earliest Ringo manuscript items we've seen. Light wear, one vertical crease, overall about Fine. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

The October through December 1960 season at the Kaiserkeller was an interesting time for the two bands performing there. Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, with more experience, were top-billed over the Beatles. (John Lennon: "They were professionals, we were still amateurs. They'd been going for years, and they'd been to Butlins, and God knows what, and they really knew how to put on a show.") Each band was expected to play six hours a night so they would alternate sets, an hour at a time. This created quite a competition between the bands as they tried to top each other's performances. The Beatles and Ringo were aware of each other from meeting back in England. (Ringo Starr: "I met the Beatles while we were playing in Germany. We'd seen them in Liverpool, but they were a nothing little band then, just putting it together...They were great in Hamburg. Really good - great rock. I knew I was better than the drummer they had at the time, and we started hanging out some...") A bond was forming between four young Livepudlians plying their chosen trade in Hamburg that would eventually and literally rock the world. (George Harrison: "Pete [Best] would never hang out with us. When we finished doing the gig, Pete would go off on his own and we three would hang out together, and then when Ringo was around it was like a full unit, both on and off the stage. When there were the four of us with Ringo, it felt rocking.") It would be August 1962 before the relationship became official and permanent, but the foundation was certainly laid on the fateful trip to Hamburg that "Richie" told his grandmother about in a postcard. Note: All quotes taken from The Beatles Anthology (San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 2000).
