Description

Beatles - John Lennon's Signed Star-Club Pay Voucher for the Club's Grand Opening Week in Matted Display (Hamburg, April 21, 1962). A pre-printed cash voucher (Kassen-Beleg) form on blue 5.75" x 4" paper, filled in by an unknown hand, rubber-stamped by the Star-Club, and signed at the bottom in blue fountain pen ink: "John Lennon". It states that "John Lennon" was now paid for (wurden heute bezahlt für): "13.4 - 19.4.62", the amount of 425 (Deutschmarks) which is written out in script and also in numerals, and is dated at bottom "21/4". It is attractively double matted to an overall 11" x 14" with a 5.5" x 4" B&W photo taken of Lennon by Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg during this same period. An incredible piece of history- not only of the Beatles but also of the legendary Star-Club's opening week. Pay voucher Very Fine. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

This April 13 - May 31 residency at the Star-Club was the Beatles' third trip to Hamburg. Earlier, they had played at the Indra, then the Kaiserkeller in 1960, and later at the Top Ten Club in 1961. The Beatles were booked to be the opening band when the city's hot new rock venue, the Star-Club, opened its doors on April 13, 1962. This was the first time that they were treated as a headline act, with more money and better accommodations than their earlier trips. George remembered this trip: "We came back to play the Star-Club, a big place and fantastic because it had a great sound system. This time we had a hotel..." Paul adds his memories: "The Star-Club was great. Manfred Weissleder, owner of the Star-Club, and Horst Fascher had Mercedes convertibles, which were pretty swish..." (The Beatles Anthology, page 69). It was a bittersweet return to Hamburg though as John, Paul, and Pete were met at the airport on April 11 by Astrid Kirchherr with the news that their friend and former bandmate Stuart Sutcliffe had died the day before. Brian and George, who had been sick, arrived the next day (this was George's first airplane ride). As they say, the show had to go on and they played to packed (2000+ capacity) houses for the next seven weeks, three to five hours a night (170+ hours total on stage). This was to be their last "pre-fame" appearances in Hamburg. While they were there, Brian Epstein sent them a telegram: "Congratulations boys. EMI request recording session. Please rehearse new material". On June 6, less than a week after getting back to England, they were in the EMI studios at Abbey Road where they met George Martin for the first time.
