Description

Beatles Early Signatures On A Star-Club Promo Photo in Matted Display (Shrewsbury, December 14, 1962). A great set of blue ink autographs, 5" x 3.75" (sight size). These are the early forms of their signatures with John's cursive "J". Ringo has added "Best wishes" above his name. It is matted with a vintage 6" x 7.75" B&W formal pose photo of the Beatles in dark suits, white shirts, and ties. This photo was taken by their friend Astrid Kirchherr during a session commissioned by Brian Epstein to highlight the band's new "cleaned-up" image, leaving behind their scruffy black leather "Hamburg" look. Double matted to an overall size of 11.75" x 15.75". Light soiling and creasing to the signed piece; two small areas of discoloration, one just beneath George's signature and the other below John's, Very Good. Handwritten letter of provenance from original owner. COA from Tracks, LTD. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.

Included with this lot is a handwritten letter from the original owner explaining how he obtained the autographs on December 14, 1962. He and a friend had met at a pub in Newtown, Powys (Wales) and decided to hitchhike the forty miles to Shrewsbury. They ended up at a concert in the Music Hall there where the Beatles (whom they never heard of) were playing. In part: "...After the Beatles had done a set we went up to their dressing room for a chat with them... They seemed like nice guys and didn't mind us having a strum on their instruments...They were offering publicity pictures left over from their gigs at the 'Star Club' in Hamburg, so I had two and they signed them there in the dressing room. I gave the other one to the girl I was going out with at the time: I remember Lennon wrote 'Regards to the Bird' on that one..."
