Description
Beatles - Brian Epstein Typed Letter Signed to Horst Fascher of the Star-Club in Hamburg (Liverpool, September 14, 1962). A one page letter, 7" x 9", on NEMS Enterprises Ltd letterhead, 12-14 Whitechapel, to Horst Fascher, signed in black ink: "Brian". He apologizes for not being able to supply requested groups for the prior weekend and then offers his group The Dakotas at 350DM per week per member for a one month stint in 1963. The Dakotas did end up performing at the Star-Club just before their first record was released in late April 1963. The letter has two file holes at left and a rusty paperclip stain at upper left affecting nothing. Overall Fine. Please view this lot on our website for a transcription of the letter. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.Horst Fascher is an important member of the Beatles' Hamburg community. A former professional boxer, he was well-suited to the role of bouncer in the tough clubs of St. Pauli. He was employed at the Kaiserkeller when the Beatles played there in late 1960, and immediately befriended the group. Horst then moved to Peter Eckhorn's Top Ten Club, and encouraged both Tony Sheridan and the Beatles to play there - the club where both were seen by Bert Kaempfert, leading to "My Bonnie". Fascher eventually moved to the Star-Club, where his role expanded to something more akin to a booking agent, as seen in this letter from Brian Epstein.
In 1978, several years after the original location closed, Horst opened a new version of the Star-Club in Hamburg. His opening night performer was Tony Sheridan, with both George Harrison and Ringo Starr in attendance.
More Information:
"Dear Horst,
"I was very sorry that I was unable to do anything about your telegram about groups for last Saturday. Unfortunately I was away on holiday but in any case none of the groups were available to come.
"Incidentally, referring again to THE DAKOTAS I am now able to offer them at 350 DM per week per each member. They would like to come for one month next year.
"Yours sincerely,
Brian Epstein"
