Beatles 1962 Performance Contract and Related Letter, both Signed by Brian Epstein (Liverpool). Two rare documents, both dated November 13, 1962, and signed by the Beatles' manager. The first is a contract measuring 8" x 13" on a NEMS Enterprises letterhead, being an agreement between NEMS (the Beatles) and Lewis's Limited for one performance on Wednesday, November 28, 1962, at Lewis's "Young Idea" Dance for a payment of £25. One of the clauses states that since the Beatles were already engaged "...elsewhere in Liverpool on the same evening and in this connection they agree not to publicise their appearance at Lewis's to the general public." Signed at the close "Brian Epstein" (slightly faded). This publicity clause should not have presented a problem for Lewis's, a major department store chain. This dance was a staff party for their employees and was held in the staff restaurant on the top floor of their flagship store on Ranelagh Street. Generally very good condition with a torn corner at lower right, soiling, and light toning.

The second item is a letter addressed to Alan Evans of Lewis's regarding this same engagement of the Beatles at their 527 Club. In it Epstein reminds him to "...please note their name to be spelt with an 'A'" and that they have agreed to a "Double" and "...will play at your dance after performing at the Cavern." Signed at the close as above. Very good condition with light toning. Note that the date of this performance was only two days after the Beatles recorded their second single "Please Please Me" and "Ask Me Why" at EMI Studios in London.
