Two Scrapbooks Related to "Gone with the Wind," 1939-1940. Compiled by Annie Laurie Kurtz, wife of Wilbur G. Kurtz, Sr., the historian who was hired to be a consultant for the film to ensure accuracy; spanning the time the couple was in California during pre-production until their return home to Atlanta for the premiere festivities, the books are filled with countless pieces of then-topical ephemera related to "GWTW" and their stay in California including: newspaper clippings (many written for the 'Atlanta Constitution' by Annie Laurie Kurtz herself), magazine clippings, restaurant menus, maps, telegrams, memos (from David O. Selznick), letters, greeting cards, invitations (from organizations like the Los Angeles Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy), call sheets from the set, black and white snapshots (though not of any of the film stars), a signed letter from Vivien Leigh, two signed letters from David O. Selznick, and many other similar items that document the goings-on related to this most famous film. (Please note all the contents of one scrapbook have been laminated, including the signed letters from Leigh and Selznick; the other scrapbook's pages are in fragile condition due to age.)
    15" x 11" x 2"

This lot was consigned by descendants of Wilbur G. Kurtz, Sr., the noted Atlanta Civil War historian and artist who was hired by David O. Selznick to be the Historical Consultant for the 1939 production of "Gone with the Wind." Kurtz was hired at the urging of Margaret Mitchell and his name appears in the opening credits of the film. Kurtz was also instrumental in helping Mitchell on matters of historical accuracy while she was writing her novel.
