Description

Tom Tyler hero "Capt. Marvel" tunic from Adventures of Captain Marvel Tom Tyler hero "Capt. Marvel" tunic from Adventures of Captain Marvel. (Republic, 1941) This pale grey wool tunic features asymmetrical false front closure with lightning bolt insignia and gold bullion gauntlets. Worn by Tom Tyler while battling the evil Scorpion in this classic 1941 serial. Internal Western Costume label is handwritten "Tom Tyler". Original stylized brass pin with circle and flame motif is present at the upper left. The original lightning bolt insignia was removed following the production and a dark grey bolt was fashioned in its place. This superhero tunic exhibits no less than five zippers: one on each sleeve; one hidden in the seam above the front "flap" and one on each side of the back to form fit Tyler's athletic physique. This trademark tunic was made for "The World's Mightiest Mortal", and the Republic serial was noteworthy for its then-astonishing special effects and a riveting, continuing storyline. This tunic remains an important piece of both cinema and superhero history and is featured prominently in Shazam: The Golden Ave of the World's Mightiest Mortal by Chip Kidd and Geoff Spear. Provenance: Christie's, December 14, 1989, lot 592.
