The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Last Laugh, and F.W.Murnau (5) vintage oversize photographs. (Decla, 1920/UFA, 1924) Within this lot of (5) oversize vintage images pertaining to German Expressionism in film are the following: for the earliest true horror classic Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari), (1) 10 x 13 in. photo-lobby card of the good doctor played by Werner Krauss revealing Conrad Veidt as Cesare the somnambulist, to Lil Dagover, the mental patient, with a subtle yet distinctly Expressionist background set, plus, a gelatin silver glossy 10 x 13 in. photograph of the doctor creating a horrific and menacing shadow across the wall; for Der Letzte Mann(The Last Laugh), (2) vintage German double-weight glossy 9 x 11.25 in. photo-lobby cards of Emil Jannings in the lead role, one of which is a totally Expressionist montage which perfectly distills the true nature of this seminal film; and finally, a vintage original German gelatin silver double-weight semi-gloss view by Albert Zander and Siegmund Labisch of the Berlin home of director F.W. Murnau. Condition varies somewhat, as the Caligari lobby card is likely trimmed down from 11 x 14 in. and the glossy photo bears reinforcement tape around verso, while both Last Laugh prints exhibit marginal chipping and reinforcement tape on verso. Each item in this lot is a true rarity and treasure from the earliest history of film horror and Expressionism.
