Star Trek - Gene Roddenberry Typed Letter Signed (1965). "Gene R." One page, 8.5" x 11", March 29, 1965, Hollywood, on Desilu Productions Inc. letterhead, addressed to Matt Jefferies, regarding the second pilot. Jefferies is best known as the art and set designer on the Star Trek television series. The letter reads, in full: "This is just a brief note to keep you up to date on the STAR TREK situation. On Friday, NBC agreed to order a second STAR TREK episode with options for more segments if this one meets their approval. These episodes would probably be aimed for a spring 1966 replacement. As soon as I have more definite information as to dates, I will, of course, be contacting you." Little did the two men realize that the series would go on to become both an international phenomenon and one of the most successful entertainment franchises in history. The letter is in Very Good condition, with flattened folds, light toning at edges, and three holes punched along left margin. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Provenance: From the collection of Space and Aviation collector, Rick Cigel.

This poignant letter dates to March 1965; a pivotal moment in the history of Star Trek. The first pilot episode for the show titled "The Cage" was rejected by NBC in February, 1965. Unusually, NBC agreed for a second pilot to be commissioned, reportedly at the insistence, no less, of Desilu Productions head Lucille Ball, who was a firm believer of Star Trek's potential. Jefferey Hunter, who had the starring role of Christopher Pike in the first pilot, declined to be involved in the second pilot, and a new lead character Captain Kirk was developed, to be played by Wililam Shatner.
