Description
Screenwriter David Newman personal first draft script for Bonnie and Clyde. (Warner Bros., 1967) One of the most important, watershed films of the 1960s, heralding the "American New Wave". Consisting of 157-pages in the original tattered green leatherette wraps, embossed with the film title and "Studio Duplicating Service, New York" (professionally printed; not Xeroxed). Title page reads, "Bonnie and Clyde/ film script by David Newman and Robert Benton" with the writers' credit covered by sticker "Property of Tatira Productions, Inc.". Title page shows rectangular loss at lower right corner, typical of script check-out tabs, and is hand inscribed at upper right corner "#8 David Newman" identifying this as writer Newman's own personal copy. Being a very first draft, numerous differences between the page and the film-as-shot exist throughout, most notably in scenes such as the iconic, bloodbath ending. The script states, "We never see Bonnie and Clyde dead..." If that intention had remained, the world would have lost one of the most wrenchingly honest depictions of cinematic violence in screen history. Wraps are creased throughout with marginal chipping and tatters. Spine is partially separated though present, as are the original brass binding brads. Interior pages show signs of handling at beginning and end, with light toning to extremities, though all pages are present without markings or other defacement, apart from that mentioned above for the title page. Generally in vintage good condition.Heritage Auctions provides detailed information when available but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
