Lew Anderson "Clarabell the Clown" Black Selmer Clarinet from The Howdy Doody Show & Other Appearances(NBC, 1947-1960). Clarinet used by Lew Anderson as "Clarabell the Clown" from the pioneering children's series The Howdy Doody Show. Included is black Selmer clarinet with a Michael Lurie USA 3 reed, made in France c. 1954, and used by Anderson with his All-American Big Band until his retirement. When the Clarabell part became available, Buffalo Bob Smith (who later considered Anderson the best Clarabell) and the other producers asked Mr. Anderson if he could juggle. "No." Dance? "No." Magic tricks? "No." What can you do? "Nothing." "Perfect, you start tomorrow," Mr. Smith said. This instrument was likely used by Lew Anderson on Howdy Doody (1947-1960), the revival series, The New Howdy Doody Show (1976), and It's Howdy Doody Time (1987), a star-studded special that celebrated Howdy Doody's 40th birthday. Acquired from Mr. Lew Anderson. Exhibits general wear commensurate with its age and use, one pad detached, but present, but remains Very Good, and fully functional.
