Description
Imperial Stormtrooper Helmet from the Collection of Costume Designer John Mollo with Signed LOA from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (TCF, 1977). Vintage original Stormtrooper helmet with impeccable provenance, originating from the collection of legendary costume designer John Mollo, who won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Star Wars in the 1978 ceremonies. Crafted of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and painted white with black and gray detailing on the ear pieces, black paint on the chin and mouth, with black rubber trim piece along the brow, plus decals applied to the tubes, cheek panels and four sections along the crown. The interior is fitted with a piece of green celluloid acting as lenses for the eyes, and a single piece of foam padding is present on the crown and a black elastic strap is installed. This was one of about twelve helmets from the first Star Wars film (A New Hope) that were reconditioned for use in The Empire Strikes Back. Included with the lot is an LOA signed by John Mollo, dated 17 December 2003, stating the following: "This is to certify that the Stormtrooper's helmet sold at Christie's South Kensington on 16 December 2003 (Lot No. 203) is one that was made under my supervision for STAR WARS early in 1977. Owing to problems getting the right plastic the crown of the helmet was made of khaki coloured plastic which had subsequently to be painted, which proved quite difficult. The second batch of helmets used on THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK were vacuum formed entirely in white plastic. I also confirm that to the best of my recollection this helmet was used as a 'stunt' helmet." Exhibits age and production wear including areas of paint loss with flaking, cracking and scuffing to paint surface. The two microphone/aerators are missing (exactly as sold by Mollo). In addition to the Mollo signed LOA, lot includes an 8" x 10" black & white still showing rows of Stormtroopers wearing identical helmets and the original Christie's lot tag. Provenance: The John Mollo Collection, Christie's South Kensington, December 16, 2003, Lot 203.
