Description
Peter Fonda's Iconic "Captain America" Stars & Stripes Helmet from Easy Rider!
An indelible symbol of the counterculture movement of the 1960s.
Easy Rider (Columbia, 1969), Peter Fonda
"Wyatt"/"Captain America" Screen Matched Hero Signature Stars &
Stripes Motorcycle Helmet. Vintage original Bell Toptex
open-face helmet custom painted by the film production with stars
and stripes in red, white, and blue to match "Wyatt"/"Captain
America's" (Peter Fonda) custom chopper ridden throughout the
landmark counterculture film. Until recently, this helmet has
remained in the sole possession of Len Marsal, assistant
director/second unit director of the film. Although the helmet
exhibits considerable paint loss, there are several unique scuffs
and dings in the fiberglass finish which screen match many riding
sequences in the film, including Wyatt wearing the helmet with
George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), in addition to scenes when the
helmet is strapped to the sissy bar in the back. Easy Rider
became a landmark film, epitomizing the spirit of the 1960s
counterculture. The film captured the zeitgeist of the era,
including the tension between conservative, traditional American
values and the growing countercultural movement focused on civil
rights, anti-war sentiments, and personal freedom. Peter Fonda was
heavily involved in the creation of his character's look and the
bike's design. Fonda himself became associated with the chopper and
the helmet, embodying the cool, rebellious spirit they represented.
After Easy Rider, Fonda became a countercultural icon, and
the chopper and helmet are inseparably linked to his persona. The
helmet, with its stars and stripes design, became a lasting image
of anti-establishment fashion, symbolizing individuality and
nonconformity. Exhibits expected age with heavy production wear,
scuffing and severe paint loss. Buyers note: The paint finish is
quite fragile and susceptible to loss of tiny paint flakes when
handled. Provenance: From the collection of assistant
director/second unit director Len Marsal. This helmet has never
been offered at public auction. Comes with a COA from Heritage
Auctions.
