Description
David Letterman's Home Base Interview Desk, Dimensional Skyline Buildings, Elevated Train Track Low Wall, Set Elements, and Reproduction Chairs from Late Show with David Letterman (CBS TV, 1993-2015). "Wake the kids and phone the neighbors!" This lot comprises David Letterman's desk and many of the intricate set elements for his long-running NBC late-night talk show. The items include: (1) his gray home base interview desk with a thick wooden top, of a rounded "L" shape, and horizontal burgundy trim, constructed out of wood, with contrasting color inset along the bottom of the desk. The top has a cutout for mounting a video monitor below (monitor not present). This desk was used for the last years of Late Night with David Letterman (1982-1993), including Dave's final show before leaving for CBS. Measures 29"H x 65"L x 26"D. (2) A home base stage left window unit, (3) and a similar stage right window unit constructed of iron, painted turquoise blue and used for his most famous recurring gag, which was throwing pencils or index cards through the them, accompanied by the sound of broken glass. These large windows measure approximately 104" x 63" x 1". (4) Two large, curved window end units constructed of iron, painted turquoise blue and two of the four panes that comprised the windows directly behind his desk that offered a dazzling view of the New York City skyline and used for the final years of the show. Measures 104" x 45" x 5". (5) A large collection of 20 unique, hand-made "miniature" dimensional buildings of the iconic New York City skyline, each intricately constructed of wood, plastic, glass, and other materials, with construction cranes, scaffolds, and construction elevator, expertly wired with practical lighting and cooling systems within. The buildings include the Empire State Building, World Trade Center, Trump Tower, and many others. The set was designed by Ms. Kathleen Ankers and built by Lincoln Scenic Studios, Inc., most bearing the builders' markings, "Late Night" or "Letterman" stenciled in black paint on the reverse. The buildings range in sizes from low ones of 28" to 31" tall, medium ones of 66" to 84" tall, and large ones of 102" to 124" tall. (6) A home base low set wall constructed of wood and acrylic, hand-painted with buildings and an elevated train track along its upper edge, which was positioned behind the dimensional buildings outside of David Letterman's window. Measures 120" x 52". (7) A yellow collapsible drinking cup, pre-printed with "Late Night with David Letterman Plastic Collapsible Drinking Cups", and (8) a yellow sponge facial blotter similarly printed. (9) A blue swivel desk chair in the style used on the show (Dave took the original chair home on the last day of taping to re-use on the CBS program), (10) a pair of guest chairs, not original to the program, added for display, and (11) an RCA-66 pill microphone, circa 1950s, that was used in New York television production, but not original to Late Night with David Letterman. All show minor signs of wear commensurate with age and extensive production use, but remain in very good condition. Acquired from NBC Productions.
