    Description

A Paul Henreid-Related "Victor Laszlo" Prop Passport from "Casablanca." Warner Bros., 1942. Tan paper cover reads in part "Republique Francaise / Passeport / No 17418 / Nom: Laslo [sic] / Prenoms: Victor," 12 interior pages (though nine are blank with just "Void" perforated stamps evident), one page outlines "Laszlo's" physical characteristics, opposite page features a black and white headshot of Henreid with prop police stamps and his character's signature, next two pages show various faux customs stamps that trace "Laszlo's" journey from Oran, Algiers, Oudjda, Casablanca, and finally on to New York arriving "17/12/42," red ink stamps reading "Not Valid / For Motion Picture / Use Only" appear on the back blank pages; likely quickly made by the WB prop department as there are inconsistencies: no cédille on "Francaise" on the cover and the character's name is twice spelled wrong; also, as a Czech citizen, "Laszlo" would not have had a French passport; unfortunately, Henreid is never seen with this prop onscreen, though an identical-looking one is used when a man is directed to see "Signor Ferrari" [Sydney Greenstreet] at the Blue Parrot; interestingly, a prop "Ilsa Lund" [Ingrid Bergman] passport was also made for the production but that one wasn't used either-- perhaps passport-related scenes were shot and cut or just never filmed at all as the screenplay was infamously changing on a daily basis during production. (Please note there is slight paper loss on the front cover and all margins are somewhat brittle due to age.)
    5 3/4" x 4 1/4"

    PROVENANCE:
An almost identical "Victor Laszlo" prop passport sold in the Bonhams (New York) auction titled "TCM Presents There's No Place Like Hollywood" auction, Sale 22196, November 24, 2014, Lot 87, final price realized was $18,750; there were likely a number of these duplicate props made for the production (not only for "Laszlo" but for other characters as well) as "passports" and "papers" and "travel" are all major themes throughout the film.
