A Pair of Monumental Handpainted Banners from "Rocky." United Artists, 1976. Two acrylic on canvas painted banners featuring a full length fight portrait of Sylvester Stallone as "Rocky Balboa" and Carl Weathers as "Apollo Creed." These supersize banners are spot lit and clearly visible throughout the climactic fight scene between "Creed" and "Balboa." (Please note one wooden frame is broken but can be easily repaired.) Light signs of use at the top, bottom and edges.
    360" x 183 1/2" (30 feet x 15 1/4 feet)

"This is about the disparity between Rocky and Apollo Creed. Rocky is so lowly regarded in this fight, he is such an underdog, that they mistakenly paint his trunks wrong. When I saw that, I thought, "My God, let's make a scene out of this." And literally we got the fella who was playing the promoter out of bed, he walks past in just a single shot and says, "What're ya doin' here, Rocky?" and I go, "Oh, uh, they made a mistake. My, my...I'm wearing white trunks with a red stripe." He goes, "It really doesn't matter" -- insinuating: "You're gonna get slaughtered anyway so just give it your best shot." So from a disaster, the mistake in this painting, it turned in to one of the better scenes in the movie. And it ended up being a very profound scene because Rocky then goes home and tells Adrian, "I can't win. I went there, I saw things tonight, I am just an insignificant man..." And this painting is what set that scene in motion. If I hadn't seen this piece, I wouldn't have started to think about how Rocky's gotta realize he can't win. But there's a different kind of victory, a moral victory, and that's what Rocky decides to go for, all from the mistake in this painting!"
