Description

The Rolling Stones Sympathy For the Devil US Premiere Poster (New Line, 1970). Vintage original full-bleed poster measuring 34.5" x 46.75", promoting the April 1970 American premiere of producer Iain Quarrier's cut of the film directed by Jean-Luc Godard - an edited version that significantly altered Godard's vision of the picture. The movie had no distributor in the United States, but a theater owner in Ann Arbor wanted to exhibit the film. With no promotional materials available for the picture, the exhibitor, who had some experience in poster production, decided to create his own piece for the movie. Originally, a press run of around 100 copies of the silkscreen were produced, but today only a few have survived. An impressive design of an experimental take on the cultural importance of the Stones in the late 1960s. Literature: The Rolling Stones 50, 2012, p. 175 (illustrated). Folded, exhibits handling wear including to the fold lines with some tears along fold lines, and light nick and tears to the paper edges, tape marks to verso. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Charlie Watts recalls "the great French cinematic innovator" Jean-Luc Godard visiting the Stones at Olympic Studios between June 4-10, 1968, and didn't necessarily make a good impression on the band - while filming "he [Godard] managed to set the studio on fire"!
