An astonishing treasure from the early days of cinema, original material such as this American one sheet from Robert Wiene's monument to German Expressionism is exceedingly rare and highly sought after as it is likely the only remaining copy that we know of. Composing a tale of unprecedented terror, writers Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer plunged headlong into the murky depths of the human mind, exploring the shifting boundary between subjectivity and insanity.
One of the most influential films in all of cinema and often cited as the first horror movie ever made, Werner Krauss portrays the insane Dr. Caligari who uses his somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders. The picture surveys the dark world of mind control, imagination, and murder, pushing the art of film into the realm of psychological fear and fantasy. With its nightmarish set design and compelling story, the film inspired directors like Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau, Paul Leni, and countless modern filmmakers since its theatrical debut. Receiving a wide foreign release during a period when restrictions on German film imports began to ease, the film was acquired for distribution in America by Goldwyn Distributing, enabling its premiere in the US in 1921. While differing evidence has been provided about the film's initial critical response, the film is nonetheless recognized as a quintessential work in the history of cinema. The condition of this extremely scarce poster is just as impressive as its vibrant and expressionistic design, an exceptionally unique opportunity for collectors. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
