Description

Two Negatives of Boris Karloff from The Old Dark House, Including Test Makeup. Boris Karloff's eagerly-awaited horror follow-up to Frankenstein was Universal's The Old Dark House (1932), directed by James Whale with macabre elegance and setting Karloff loose as Morgan, the mad, drunken butler of the title domicile. This lot features an ultra-rare negative of Karloff in the fierce, almost bestial test makeup by the legendary Jack P. Pierce. Also included is a negative of the final, refined makeup, with Karloff's Morgan (still a very unnerving image!) casting a monstrous shadow on the wall. Wonderful testimony to Karloff's stardom and classic Universal horror. Excellent condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
