Personal Signed Photo of Boris Karloff at Home, 1931/1932. Following his shattering performance as the Monster in Frankenstein, Karloff celebrated his new stardom by buying a home on the shore of Toluca Lake. This 5" x 7" personal photo from the Karloff family shows the house, Boris on the balcony, and his wife Dorothy and an unidentified woman on the grounds. Written in black fountain ink in the upper right area is the inscription, "To Dorothy and Boris Karloff with many thanks for hospitality 1931-32," followed by a full (and indecipherable) signature. The reverse bears the stamp, "Enlarged by Earl V. Lewis Co., L.A. & Hollywood." One can presume the guest took this photo as a snapshot, had it enlarged and signed it to the Karloffs. The picture survives as testimony to the "fruits of stardom" enjoyed by Karloff after Frankenstein, and the generous way the star shared his good fortune with friends. Excellent condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
