Marilyn Monroe to Open USA-Israel Football International, Ebbets Field, New York City, 1957, 10" x 8" Original Press Photograph by Ellahu Attar. PSA/DNA Type 1. Vintage gelatin silver glossy 10" x 8" press photograph of Marilyn Monroe kicking a soccer ball to open USA (all-star team from American Soccer League)-Israel (Hapoel F.C.), Ebbets Field, New York City, 1957, by Ellahu Attar, with credit wet stamp and print number "103 / 24 (sic)" in graphite on the verso. Monroe was in New York to promote "Some Like It Hot". The match was part of Israel's post-independence goodwill tour of the United States, intended to strengthen cultural ties through sport. Monroe's presence brought instant press attention, linking America's most famous screen star with a symbolic contest that carried diplomatic overtones at the height of the Cold War. While in New York, Monroe was also engaged in promotion for Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot, then in pre-production, making this photograph a rare intersection of mid-century celebrity culture, international sport, and soft diplomacy.
