Now regarded as the most legendary lost film of the silent era, London After Midnight vanished after the last known print was destroyed in the 1965 MGM vault fire. Surviving still photographs, like this one, have become the sole visual record of the film's striking imagery, with Chaney's vampire disguise and Tichenor's spectral supporting role evoking a uniquely stylized horror aesthetic. Edna Tichenor, who frequently appeared in Tod Browning's films, embodies here the dreamlike menace that permeated Browning's silent-era horror.
