Christie won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while Schlesinger's sharp social critique established him as one of Britain's leading filmmakers of the decade. These key set photographs provide a vivid visual record of one of the essential works of Swinging London cinema and of Christie's transformation into an international star.
Doctor Zhivago, David Lean's sweeping adaptation of Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize–winning novel, became one of the most celebrated epics of the 1960s, intertwining romance and revolution against the backdrop of the Russian Civil War. Its unforgettable performances, Maurice Jarre's haunting score, and Freddie Young's cinematography made it a global box-office triumph and a cultural landmark.
Directed by John Schlesinger and adapted from Thomas Hardy's classic 1874 novel, Far from the Madding Crowd was a major MGM production shot on location in Dorset, Wiltshire, and Norfolk, celebrated for its lush CinemaScope landscapes and Richard Rodney Bennett's evocative score. Christie starred as Bathsheba Everdene, opposite Finch's stoic Boldwood, Bates's steadfast Gabriel Oak, and Stamp's dashing but reckless Sergeant Troy, in a heartbreaking story exploring romantic love and the social mores of rural Victorian England. One of the greatest films of the era.
