"Penn rented a barnlike building in Sausalito, with windows facing north to capture the soft sunlight and a reinforced second floor. The northern exposure was crucial because Penn only photographed using available sunlight. The reinforced floor was also crucial because Penn asked his subjects among the Hells Angels to ride their Harleys into the freight elevator and punch the button for the second floor, then ride out into the makeshift studio to pose for their portraits.
Over the course of several weeks, Penn shot the Angels, and bands, in portraits and in groups. Amazingly, he was able to persuade the members of the Grateful Dead and Big Brother & the Holding Company to pose together for a team picture.
His images became an eight-page Look photo spread titled "The Incredibles," which ran on Jan. 9, 1968."
