Claude Rains' Original Stills from The Adventures of Robin Hood by Elmer Fryer. One of the joys of 1938's gloriously Technicolor The Adventures of Robin Hood is Claude Rains' red-wigged, red-bearded, and black-hearted Prince John -- a role the actor played with such fey, eye-popping flamboyance that his villainous usurper comes off as a bewhiskered Bette Davis. (In fact, Roddy McDowall once asked Rains if he had intentionally lampooned Davis as Prince John and Rains' only reply was "a enigmatic smile"!) In later years, Rains revealed to his daughter that he'd enjoyed playing the prissy prince as a homosexual (subtle mannerisms, of course), but whatever the scoundrel's sexual proclivity, he was delightfully and unforgettably vile. Here are two splendid original 7.5" x 9.5" Warner Bros. portraits of Rains as Prince John; one of him epicenely sampling a bouquet of grapes, the other of him vainly admiring himself in a hand mirror. Rains wrote in pencil on the reverse of the latter, "Prince John who loved himself." In addition there are three wonderful original "straight" portraits measuring 7.5" x 7.5", 7.5" x 8.5", and 7.5" x 9.5"; two of the actor at his leisure in casual garb, and one of him dressed to the nines in double-breasted coat and black hat. Rains signed his name in full and in pencil on the reverse of one of the casual shots and added questioningly, "in? 1936." Each of the five shots has the stamp on the reverse, "Photograph by Elmer Fryer, Warner Bros. F.N. Studios." Wonderful portraits (little wonder Rains saved them) and the Prince John shots will inspire you to speak treason - "fluently!". In Excellent condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive.
