    Description

Claude Rains' Caesar and Cleopatra Stills with Notations. Produced in England in 1945 and the most expensive British film production to that time, Caesar and Cleopatra, based on George Bernard Shaw's play, starred Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh as the doomed royal lovers, under the direction of Gabriel Pascal. These three 7.5" x 9.5" still proofs include a shot of Rains and Leigh on a palatial set, on which Rains has written in pencil on the reverse "Farewell"; a shot of Rains and Stewart Granger, with Rains having penciled on the reverse, "Apollodorous and Me"; and an exterior shot of Rains amidst throngs of soldiers and extras, making a grand entrance. On the reverse of this last shot, Rains has written in pencil, "Caesar and Co. enter the Palace steps for last scene"; he adds something indecipherable regarding deMille, then writes, "Just before the take, Pascal (director) said, 'When you make the entrance, think of Mussolini.' Jesus!!!!" The shot with Granger has the words "Rough Proof" written in the upper left area of the picture, a 1" tear mark touching Rains' foot and a modern script page attached to the reverse (which could easily be removed), and the grand entrance shot has some minor creasing; otherwise, they are in overall Very Good condition.
