Children of Paradise (Les Enfants du Paradis) (dir. Marcel Carné) is widely hailed as the "French Gone With the Wind" — a monumental achievement of poetic realism produced under extraordinary circumstances during the German Occupation of France. Its three-hour narrative, set in the theatrical world of 1820s Paris, explores love, art, and betrayal against the backdrop of the Boulevard du Crime, the Parisian center of popular theatre. The film's dialogue, written by Jacques Prévert, and its ensemble performances — especially Arletty's Garance and Barrault's Baptiste — have secured its place as one of cinema's greatest works. In 1995, it was voted the "Best French Film of the Century" by a poll of 600 critics and professionals conducted by the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.
