    Description

Boris Karloff Warner Bros. Photo Archive. In 1935 Boris Karloff signed a non-exclusive contract with Warner Bros. and headlined five melodramas for that studio. The lot includes three stills from The Walking Dead, two from West of Shanghai (plus three negatives), one from The Invisible Menace, two from Devil's Island (plus three negatives), and one from British Intelligence (plus an 8 " x 10" negative portrait). Also in the lot: a magnificent, original 11" x 14" profile portrait from Devil's Island, with "Elmer Fryer Hollywood" embossed in the lower left corner. Karloff had saved relatively few of his own oversize portraits at the time of his death, and this was one of them. One of The Walking Dead stills has border damage; another still from that film and the one from British Intelligence have the Museum of Modern Art stamp en verso and appeared in the book Dear Boris. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
