Boris Karloff Universal Composite and Vanity Fair Artwork. Here are two wonderful Karloff items. First is an original Universal Studios still from 1937, showing Karloff surrounded by head shots of some of his most famous roles of the 1930's: Frankenstein's Monster, Morgan of The Old Dark House (both final and test makeup), The Mummy, Bateman in The Raven (both makeups), Rukh in The Invisible Ray (test and final makeup), and Mallory in Night Key. Original snipe on the reverse hails Karloff as "The Man of Many Faces" and identifies the roles. The shot appears in the book Dear Boris and has the layout overlay for identifications of the makeups. The second item is a color two-page illustration by Robert Schulenberg, featured in the March 1983 Vanity Fair, titled "The Stars Look Down from Mount Olympus," with 29 stars caricatured as Greek gods: John Barrymore as Zeus, Mae West as Aphrodite, Conrad Veidt as Hades, etc.; Karloff appears as Charon, the ferry man of the River Styx! This was Evelyn Karloff's personal copy, sent to her by a friend who noted on the reverse that she might get a lithograph from Vanity Fair. Both the still and the illustration (folded in half and preserved in plastic) are in Excellent condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
