Boris Karloff The Ghoul Photos. In 1933, Karloff's fame as Hollywood's top horror star won him passage to England -- where he'd not been since leaving his native country 24 years earlier -- to star in The Ghoul. This lot includes a marvelous candid shot of Karloff, on ship, seeing his homeland for the first time in nearly a quarter-century; his widow Evelyn had written on the reverse details about the return and that it was "a most tearful moment for Boris." Also in the lot: a terrific behind-the-scenes photo of Boris in the title role, filmed by the crew as his esteemed co-star Sir Cedric Hardwicke sits behind the camera; a shot of the Ghoul crashing through a barred window; and a portrait pose of Karloff from The Ghoul, sans makeup and looking very much the distinguished star in overcoat and with cane. Good to Very Good condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
