Boris Karloff Son of Frankenstein Archive. Karloff's third and final performance as the harrowing, heartbreaking Monster came in Universal's Son of Frankenstein (1939). This epic horror film, directed with flair by Rowland V. Lee, co-starred Basil Rathbone as the Frankenstein heir, Bela Lugosi as broken necked old Ygor and Lionel Atwill as one-armed Inspector Krogh. It proved to be a box office smash that saved the horror genre from the tomb where censors had buried it alive. This archive pays tribute to Karloff's farewell Monster portrayal with four portraits of Karloff's creature, plus two shots of the Monster with Lugosi's superbly evil Ygor and - most curiously - a color shot of Boris in the classic makeup! Actually, this "color" shot has a 3-D effect - and is the creation of Kenneth Strickfaden, the legendary electrical special effects creator. Strickfaden, a professional photographer, originally color-tinted by hand this shot of the Monster, standing next to Strickfaden's "mad lab" creation, the Nebularium. He experimentally achieved the effect via panes of glass and various miniature electrodes, insulators and metal balls. Strickfaden has added his trademark "Elecstrick" on the laboratory paraphernalia. Considering Strickfaden was on the set of all of Universal's Frankenstein films, his color depiction of the Monster is certainly likely accurate. (This is a copy of his original.) All shots are 8" x 10" and are in Very Good condition. Also included is the negative for one of the portraits and a slide of Strickfaden's color shot. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
