Description

Boris Karloff's Peter Pan Photo Archive. Boris Karloff enjoyed one of the great triumphs of his life in the dual role of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook in Peter Pan, which premiered on Broadway in April of 1950. Jean Arthur played Peter, Leonard Bernstein wrote the music and lyrics and the play was a smash hit. This lot offers four color transparencies of Karloff as the infamous Hook, a b&w 8" x 10" shot of Karloff as the pirate king, a photo of the "Lost Boys" in the show with Karloff having added the name of each boy and the character each played on the reverse in fountain ink, an 8" x 10" shot of two of the boys in the show aiming pistols at Karloff's head (plus a negative of the shot), four black-and-white postcards of Karloff as Hook (showing his hook!), a shot of Karloff with one of the boys, a sketch of Boris in full Hook regalia, two negatives of Karloff as Hook, and a 1982 article from the London Times titled "Peter Pan No Longer the Pretend Boy," added to the file in later years by Evelyn Karloff. Bonus: an autographed 8" x 10" shot of Joe E. Marks as "Smee," inscribed to Sara -- but he forgot to sign his name! This was surely one of the great joys of Karloff's career -- and a trademark of his performance was to invite children from the audience after the show to visit him in his dressing room (where they loved trying on his hook). In Fine to Very Fine condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
