    Description

Boris Karloff Pre-Frankenstein Photos from 1931. In 1931, Boris Karloff became one of Hollywood's most striking pre-Code villains, and this lot traces his professional ascent that would climax in Frankenstein. The seven 8" x 10" stills include a shot of the January 1931 Central Casting Directory with a portrait of Karloff as jailbird "Galloway" in The Criminal Code; an additional portrait of Karloff as Galloway; a shot of Karloff as dope-peddler "Cokey Joe" in Young Donovan's Kid; a still as the perverse "Isopod" of Five Star Final; as gangster Gaffney in Scarface; and two shots as evil "Nikko" in The Miracle Man. (Karloff actually filmed The Miracle Man after Frankenstein, but before the horror classic's release changed his life and career.) Also included are a negative of the Central Casting Directory page and two negatives of a Karloff portrait from Young Donovan's Kid. The stills from Young Donovan's Kid and The Miracle Man have the Museum of Modern Art stamp on verso and appeared in the book Dear Boris. The Five Star Final shot, with Boris leering at Ona Munson's fishnets, is especially effectively vile. In Very Good condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
